  1. Debbie Miller's books always inspire me to be a better teacher. After reading this book, I am inspired to allow my students more time to work with partners or in small groups. I plan to rearrange my classroom to move student desks from straight rows into small groups. I want my students to be able to find answers and solve problems not only by themselves; but also, with a partner. Also, instead of completely decorating my classroom at the beginning of the school year, I am going to wait and allow the students to decorate my classroom with evidence of their learning. I also want to take more time to confer with each of my students to individually help each one in their learning process. I want to try and individualize my instruction as much as possible. I am inspired by Debbie Miller to try to create a classroom where learning is fun, exciting, and engaging for all of my students.

  2. Like Ginger, I would like to be a learner in my classroom. I want students to feel secure and know that the classroom facilitates learning. I stress the importance of it being our classroom and students should take pride in it. In the first chapters Debbie Miller discusses the importance of classroom organization, environment, and arrangement. I am structured and I feel that works for me as long as my students know my expectations. I have always been one to arrange and perhaps rearrange many times during the year. It is generally students at the beginning of the year as you learn their personalities, learning styles and other issues. Since technology is being utilized more I have found classroom arrangement has been difficult. I plan to use checklist and many other points stressed in the text.
After many years of teaching you learn things about yourself and your teaching beliefs. As long as your focus is on what you want your students to learn, how you plan, and carry out the plan you can be effective. Teaching is a unique position and it’s the teacher that makes it real.

  3. Debbie Miller easily captures my attention with her motivational ideas from her teaching experience. I enjoy her style of writing and especially the way she includes student examples. Mrs. Miller inspires me to try to be a stronger better teacher. I agree I probably spend too much time at the beginning of each new school year preparing the classroom when I could wait and let the students be more involved. I too like Mrs. Miller will be lost without my own classroom. I guess I can create my own space with my many memories of 35 years in my third grade classroom at Knight Enloe. I can see my laundry room transforming into a small classroom....just close the folding doors on the washer and dryer! Sharron and Ginger, You girls have inspired me so much during the years. You are both great teachers that instill the love of learning daily. Keep up the great work!I have to end this blog before I start crying.Knight Enloe and the entire Roanoke City School System is the best!
